What a year! Three new public gardens, the Redbud Garden, Native Shrub Garden, and Dwarf Conifer Garden, were completed during 2010, thanks to private donations and memberships. Two new gardens are currently scheduled for completion this year, the Azalea Garden and Winter Garden. Plus we plan a major expansion of the Entrance Garden.
Of course the new Botanical Center building is now open to the public. Coordinator, Katie Steinhoff is on the job helping complete the details of the day to day operations of the new Botanical Center. What a horticultural asset our community has gained! If you haven't been out to see it for some reason come by and introduce yourself.
Our membership has reached 800+ members with a goal of 1000. That is where you come in. If you have sent in membership dues, thank you! If you are still thinking about it, your membership means more than you know in helping us reach our 2011 community objectives. Your membership is good for a full 12 months from when we receive your check, you won't lose any time.
Most people ask what do I receive with my membership in Friends of the Garden. That is a great question, a member receives many benefits. Tangible benefits such as a free season pass to the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden for two people for the season (excluding the Japanese Fall Festival) and our informative newsletters that you may have read in the past. They are currently tucked inside of the new Greene Magazine. However, the real benefit is intangible. You become part of the growing Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center movement to assist with the continued development and enjoyment of Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Gardens and Park including the new Botanical Center building with its numerous surrounding gardens and arboretum.
Your investment with your membership dues and donations, plus any volunteer time you might contribute, will help us continue to expand the botanical gardens while maintaining the current gardens and the Dr. Bill Roston Native Butterfly House. Of course, as a member, you can walk the paths for exercise while enjoying the serene beauty of the gardens, attend our annual events, increase your natural knowledge and know that you helped make all of this possible.
